Here's the very short version:

The Life of a Note on shrib.co

Here's the lifespan of a shrib.co note:

  1. create the note: there are two ways to directly create a note:
  2. write and edit the note: use the empty text area to write and edit your note.
    • The note is saved automatically, and in near real-time.
    • The commands are only available when the text is safely saved to the server just so you don't risk to want to share a note that's not saved, for instance.
    • The "save" button is only enabled when there are unsaved changes.
    • Finally, the title bar of the window sports a loud "[UNSAVED]" label when there are unsaved changes.
  3. If there are internet connectivity problems and the note is not saved automatically: save the note: either hit the "save" button at the top or hit [Tab] then [Enter] (or for Safari on Macs: [Alt]+[Tab] then [Enter]) to save your note. Notice that the button is only enabled when there are actually any unsaved changes that need to be saved.
  4. share the note with another shrib.co user: hit the "share" command (only available when there are no unsaved changes) and fill out the form to share the note with another shrib.co user.
  5. publish the note: hit the "share" command (only available when there are no unsaved changes) and fill out the form to publish the note. You may choose between different markup languages, and there are direct links to publish on various platforms.
  6. delete the note: hit the "delete" command (only available when there are no unsaved changes) and choose which aspects of your notes you want to be deleted (archive, public note or the actual note).

Editing a Note with others

You can have others edit your note with you. You will need their shrib.co user name, and here's how you can invite them:

  1. From your saved note, hit the "share" command.
  2. Enter the other person's shrib.co user name.
  3. Consider and choose your options:
    • notifications: You may choose to get notified every time this user edits your note. The notification will be sent to the email address stored in your profile.
    • backups: You may choose to have a backup of the previous version stored every time this user edits your note. You can access those backups through the "archive" command or by adding a "?a" to your note's internet address.
  4. hit the "share" button.

The person will receive an email notification that he or she has been invite to edit the note with you, and he or she will have your note in her note list at <https://shrib.co>;.

In order to stop sharing the note, hit the "share" command from your note and click on the user name of the person you want to withdraw the access to your note from. The other person also has the option to remove the note from their list - but can't delete, share, or publish your note.

Publishing your Note

You can publish your note to the world with shrib.co. Here's how you can publish it and spread the word about it:

  1. From your saved note, hit the "share" command.
  2. Choose how your note should be rendered or formatted:
    • make links clickable: This way, your note is published exactly as you write it. If there are internet addresses (for example "http://www.google.com";), they are clickable.
    • Textile: Your note will be published as a text formatted using Textile markup. The Textile markup syntax is best summarized on this page.
    • Markdown: Your note will be published as a text formatted using Markdown markup. The Markdown markup syntax is best summarized on this page.
  3. By default, your note will be published "anonymously", that is with a unique and random string (example: http://p.shrib.co/EeuRcIm8fgciN). You may choose to have the public note's internet address display the actual note name as you use it and your user ID (example: http://p.shrib.co/someNote?c=5834).
  4. There are various ways you may directly spread the link to your public note:
    • post it to your wall on facebook
    • tweet it on your twitter stream
    • create a QR code to publish a link to your public note on printed material. QR code stands for quick response code (click here for more information).
    • embed the note in your own web page in an iframe.
    • share your public page by email. You get the option to either directly send an email from within shrib.co, or to cut and paste the internet address to your own email client.
    • simply get the general sharing info, that is the internet address of your public note
  5. hit the "publish" button.

The given web page at http://p.shrib.co will now always show the current version of your note, rendered as you specified it (Textile, Markup etc.). When you change your note, the public page will change as well.

In order to stop having the note published, hit the "delete" command from your note and choose "delete only the public page of this note".

Exporting your Notes

Your notes can be exported for local backup or re-use. They are exported to a ZIP file with plain text files for maximum compatibility.

To export all your notes at once, hit the "export" button at the bottom of your list at <https://shrib.co>;. The download is initiated immediately and will contain all your notes and all notes shared with you by other users.

To export a single note, you can either add "?e" to your note's internet address, or hit the "export" command that can be switched on in the preferences.
